Araluen boasts one of the world’s finest collections of Tea Roses. Over 3,000 rose bushes delight both the eye and the nose from mid-October to May. These months are best time to stop and smell the fragrant blooms as the Park is filled with scent and colourful rose delights throughout the warmer months

A Unique Rose Experience at Araluen
Araluen Botanic Park is home to a stunning and diverse collection of roses, planted not in neat formal rows, but in a way that harmonises with the surrounding Australian bushland. Among native jarrah, marri, and grass trees, these roses bloom with a charm and elegance that is uniquely Araluen.
This naturalistic approach sets Araluen apart from traditional rose gardens, offering a sensory experience that feels both cultivated and wild.
Heritage and Modern Roses
Araluen’s collection includes a wide variety of roses from different regions and periods. Visitors will find:
- Tea Roses, many of which bloom year-round in Perth’s mild climate
- Gallica Roses of French origin
- Damasks and Albas, both historically significant varieties
- Modern Shrub Roses, which bring colour and form to the garden throughout the seasons
A major highlight is the Park’s significant collection of Alister Clark roses. Clark, one of Australia’s most famous rosarians, began breeding roses in the 1920s specifically to thrive in warm climates. His legacy continues to bloom at Araluen.
A Living Garden of History
The rose garden at Araluen is steeped in history. In the 1930s, climbing roses were planted on the Margaret Simons Memorial Pergola, and beds of modern roses—then new to the gardening world—were established nearby. These gardens were later refurbished in the 1990s, with new rose beds added to expand the collection.
In 2000, a major planting effort introduced many of the roses that now make up the core of Araluen’s celebrated displays. These roses are now fully established and at their most spectacular in late October and early November.
Roses Throughout the Park
Unlike a traditional rose garden confined to one location, roses at Araluen are found throughout the Park, each section telling its own story:
- Near the Grove of the Unforgotten, beds of original 1930s roses are complemented by Iceberg, Gruss an Aachen, and Rugosa varieties.
- Near the Roundhouse, visitors can admire the delicate beauty of Felicia and Seafoam roses.
- Adjacent to the Chalet Healy Café, a bed of David Austin roses sits alongside famous heritage varieties, all at their peak in spring. Among them is the vivid yellow Rosa foetida, a species rose with historical significance, and Kazanlik, known for its use in the perfume industry.
- Moss Roses, with their fragrant and textured sepals, add unique visual and sensory interest to the collection.
The Top Rose Garden
The uppermost rose garden at Araluen features the greatest variety of roses. Here, ample space allows the plants to grow freely into large, flowering shrubs. This area showcases the full potential of each variety, with some specimens having grown into impressive, towering displays.
