Nestled within the lush landscapes of Araluen Botanic Park lies a vibrant avian paradise, where the melodies of nature are sung by the diverse ensemble of featured inhabitants. One such enchanting character gracing our gardens is the Mistletoebird, known scientifically as Dicaeum hirundinaceum and locally as Moonidjedang in Noogar. Join us on a birdwatcher’s delight as we unravel the tales of these winged wonders that call Araluen home.
At Araluen Botanic Park, the Mistletoebird takes center stage with its petite frame and vibrant plumage. While the Mistletoebird can be seen throughout the year in Perth, the best time to spot them is during the breeding season, which typically occurs from August to February. During this time, the males display their vibrant plumage and engage in courtship displays to attract the females.
These lively birds are known for their fondness for mistletoe berries which is a staple in their diet. Watch as they flit and flutter among the branches, contributing to the delicate dance of life within our park. The Mistletoebird’s distinctive call becomes a harmonious part of the symphony, echoing through the foliage and adding a unique note to Araluen’s natural soundtrack. Despite its small size, the Mistletoebird boats striking colours. The male sports a glossy black plumage with a bright red patch on its chest, while the female is adorned in olive-green tones. Measuring around 10 centimetres in length, these birds are easily identifiable by slender build and distinctive colouring.
Mistletoebirds are most active during the early morning and late afternoon, making these the best times to try and spot them. They are often found in small flocks among the branches in search of food. Keep an eye out for their characteristics chirping calls, which can help you locate them as they move from tree to tree. Our park has provided ample opportunities to observe these birds feeding on their favourite berries.
For birdwatching enthusiasts, Araluen Botanic Park offers prime locations to catch a glimpse of the Mistletoebird in action.
