Araluen Botanic Park isn’t just a garden—it’s a living canvas that changes with the light, the seasons, and the stories of its visitors. Nestled in the rolling hills of Roleystone, just 40 minutes from Perth, Araluen is a photographer’s dream. Whether you’re here to chase golden light through autumn trees, document love stories in bloom, or get up close with native birdlife, this is your place to create timeless imagery.
Araluen Through Your Lens
Capture the Seasons. Frame the Moments. Find Your Light.
Spring: A Symphony of Colour
From August to October, Araluen bursts into a floral crescendo. Over 350,000 spring bulbs—including tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and bluebells—transform the landscape into a mosaic of texture and hue.
- Best for: Macro photography, colour-field compositions, portraits in bloom
- Must-capture spots: Concourse Lawn and Old Swimming Pool tulip beds, Centenary Lawn and the Camellia Walk along the Stinton Creek, from Forest View Deck and then follow it down to the Chalet Healy Carpark. Step across the creek onto the Contour Walk Balk for a birds eye view of cherry blossoms, grand tree canopy and the entire concourse lawn and Roundhouse sweep in full flush
- Don’t miss: Symphony Among the Tulips for moody, low-light captures in the Park with limited access for ticket holders only. But tickets are limited for this event. Book online.
Autumn: Golden Light & Grand Structure
As the air cools, Araluen dons its most dramatic coat. Liquidambars, Canadian maples, and ash trees set the hills ablaze with gold, crimson, and amber.
- Best for: Landscape shots, long exposures with filtered light, fashion/editorial shoots
- Must-capture spots: Mary Hargreaves Pergola and Centenary Lawn is framed in red foliage, Brisbane Hill lookout from the Grove of the Unforgotten, for grand pergolas, rustic stone steps & walkways
- While spring at Araluen is the headline act, the Park’s beauty doesn’t fade when the tulips do. After the longer summers, the Autumn show brings its own palette of gold, amber, and crimson — and some of the Park’s most photogenic moments.
- The view across the Concourse Lawn to the Roundhouse Café is a must-capture vista. This long, elegant landscape layers heritage stone walls, sweeping lawns, and lush gardens into one perfect frame.
- On the Chalet Healy Lawn, the Chrysanthemum collection bursts into late-season colour, each bloom more intricate than the last. And in the Rose Garden, magnificent cultivars put on a performance that rivals any spring display — a fragrant reminder that beauty here is never confined to just one season.
- Bonus: Early morning mist offers a rare mood for storytelling shots
Wildlife & Birdlife All Year Round
The Park’s water features, native bushland, and mature canopy attract over 60 bird species—from the striking Red-tailed Black Cockatoo to the gem-like Splendid Fairy-wren.
- Best for: Telephoto nature photography, behavioural studies, slow photography
- Bird highlights by season:
- Spring: Cuckoo calls and nest-building activity, Splendid Fairy Wrens and Red Breasted Robins will be darting around the Flowering Camellias and be found everywhere throughout the Park.
- Summer: Parrot activity near the water and Black Cockatoos can be heard across the valley of the garden
- Autumn-Winter: Wedge-tailed eagles soaring above the valley, while the blue wrens flit around the flowering trees
Timeless Landscapes & Heritage Textures
Every path, column, and cabin at Araluen tells a story. The heritage-listed stone structures, 1930s log cabins, and flowing Stinton Creek offer rich visual narratives in any light.
- Best for: Architectural shots, moody black-and-white, abstract stone and texture studies
- Look for: Reflections in the pools, tree-lined walkways, mosaic stonework on the heritage trail
People & Portraits in the Park
The Park is a favourite for engagement shoots, graduation photos, and family memories that feel natural and joyful. The play of light under the Marri trees creates magic.
- Best for: Lifestyle, wedding, and family portraits
- Golden hour: Between 4:30–6:00 PM under filtered canopy light
- Backdrop options: The stone amphitheatre, Chalet Healy terrace, Forest View deck, blossom tunnels
